Deer penis refers to the external genital organ of the male sambar deer or red deer. After slaughtering the deer, the penis and testicles are removed, cleaned of any remaining flesh and fat, and then dried on wooden boards to make the medicinal product. Sika deer penis is primarily produced in the regions of New Zealand, Jilin, Liaoning.

Sika deer are not strongly herd-dwelling animals, with male sika deer often living independently. Their activity is concentrated mainly in the morning and evening hours. Their living areas change with the seasons – in spring they prefer semi-shaded slopes, in summer/fall they migrate to shaded forest edges, and in winter they favor warmer sunny slopes. Their diet consists primarily of grasses, fruits, herbaceous plants, tree buds, and agricultural crops.

After slaughtering the deer, the penis and testes are harvested, any remaining flesh and fat is removed. The penis is then fixed onto a wooden board and air-dried. The ideal deer penis is large in size, oily/fatty in appearance, free of any leftover flesh or fat, unaffected by insect damage and thoroughly dried.
